Treatments for Bed Bugs

heat bed bugs

The common treatment of bed bugs is through pesticides (chemical), or by the application of extreme temperatures.

However, bed bugs have shown the ability to adapt to some chemical treatments, which limits its effectiveness…and you don’t want to leave ANY stray bugs alive! Just ONE mature female can infest your home with thousands of eggs in various locations, creating a population nightmare!

A more effective treatment is the application of heat to infected and surrounding areas. This is the fastest and currently the most effective method of eradication of all bugs in the treatment area, and is used successfully in hotel chains worldwide. The heat treatment doesn’t harm furniture, and if there’s any possibility of items in your home being “at risk” to the needed temperature, we will let you know, of course!

The use of heat treatment is far safer than any chemical treatment, and can be accomplished in a few hours to a day in the average home rather than a couple of weeks. Heat can reach lethal levels for the little menaces inside mattresses, pillows, wall voids, books, and all contents within a given treatment area. It leaves them trapped with no where to go to escape the deadly heat.

Treating Yourself

  • Success in treating yourself can take several weeks and even months.
  • Depends on several factors including the extent of the infestation
    • The amount of harboring areas for the pests.
    • Where you live (whether in an apartment or single family home).
  • All clothing, bedding, blankets, etc. need to be placed in a plastic bag and should be washed in a sanitized setting in your washer and dryer.
  • Empty all dresser drawers and thoroughly vacuum all drawers and any crack or crevice they may be hiding in.
  • Carpets, especially in corners and underneath baseboards need to be vacuumed.
  • Seal the bag and throw it away in an outdoor trash can.
  • Couches and stuffed chairs have lots of hiding places that can contain bed bugs and eggs.
  • It is possible these may need to be thrown away if you do not feel you can confidently eliminate the bed bugs from it.
  • Mattresses need to be vacuumed thoroughly and then sealed with a bed bug mattress cover.
  • The bed frame should be disassembled and vacuumed. After doing this, purchase EPA-registered pesticides and use according to the label in all infected areas.

This process may need to be repeated several times in the coming weeks until all bed bugs are eliminated. If even one female remains, you will continue to deal with the infestation. You will need to regularly check mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and other cracks and crevices for evidence of bed bugs, shells, eggs, and blood stains to ensure the problem has been eliminated.
