How Do You Get Bed Bugs?

Bug Bite

Bed Bugs have been around for thousands of years!  At one time in the mid-twentieth century, they were almost completely eradicated from the more civilized world. However, due to the increase in foreign travel, a biological resistance to some pesticide formulas, and a lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, there has been a dramatic resurgence of infestations which began in hotels and has been spread to homes and apartments all across North America and the world.

Bedbugs can be found almost anywhere where there are people.

  • Bed Bugs are some of the best hitchhikers in the world.
  • They are most commonly found in hotels, airports and resorts.
  • Bedbugs are also found in apartments, barracks, buses, cabins, churches, community centers, cruise ships, dormitories, dressing rooms, health clubs, homes, hospitals, laundromats, motels, motorhomes, moving vans, nursing homes, office buildings, resorts, restaurants, schools, subways, theaters, trains, and used furniture.

How did I get bed bugs in the first place? Bed bugs come in as stowaways in:

  • Luggage
  • Furniture
  • Pillows
  • Clothing
  • Boxes

Once at their new destination, bed bugs will nestle themselves in and begin breeding. Bed bugs need to have a blood meal in order to develop into the next stage. In order to continue mating, they need to feed about every 14 days although they can live up to a year without a meal.  Females can lay up to 3 eggs per day and 200-500 eggs in her lifetime. These eggs will take about 2 weeks to hatch, but once they do they’ll become adults in about 4 months. You can imagine how quickly this can lead to a major infestation unless you call Mayco Pest & Termite!
